Networking sessions 2017

Our meetings for 2017 will be held in a new venue (across the road from our office) in the Brisbane Square Library. The Community Meeting Room is accessible, has a hearing loop, and is larger than our training room. We’ll keep numbers to 25 to see how it works. So we’ll be interested in your feedback on this new venue.

Consumer partnerships working to improve services for young people with severe and complex mental illness

Join us to hear Jeannine Kimber and Katherine Moodie discuss their experiences as consumer and carer representatives on the Barrett Adolescent Centre Commission of Enquiry Steering Committee.

The Departments of Health and Education, and health consumers and carers, have partnered in the co-design of a new bed-based service for young people with severe and complex mental illness. This process includes detailed design, model of service and integrated educational/vocational services.

Jeannine and Katherine have been involved in this process since the early days, and will reflect on their personal experiences as consumer/carer representatives in the project. Some of their key learnings include:

  • the importance of fostering relationships when dealing with people from all levels of government
  • finding new and innovative ways to communicate
  • how to encourage others to look beyond the bureaucratic process and focus on outcomes that have genuine meaning for individuals and families.

Trigger warning: Potential participants should note that a video made by people with lived experience of mental health issues will be shown in this session. It contains frank discussion of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts as well as descriptions of self harm.
