Queensland’s COVID-19 pandemic response has exposed the existing disparities in access to healthcare.
Just as the state’s vaccination response has needed to focus on our more vulnerable citizens, so too has our health system long needed a reset based on equity and value.
The safety and wellbeing of health consumers relies on a Queensland Health system that operates wholistically, collaborating to provide seamless, evidence-based care for the benefit of Queenslanders, no matter where they live or who they are.
The need during a pandemic surge to provide care closer to home, coordinated with primary care, is an opportunity to finally embed the reform consumers and many in the system have wanted for so long.

With parts of Queensland in lockdown against the Delta variant for the first time, a public health system under extreme pressure and an acceleration in the vaccine rollout, HCQ has focused on listening to consumers and carers and staff. We moved mindfully and acted swiftly and strategically to maximise the impact of our small team and the voices of consumers, to help keep Queenslanders safe and well.
Amplifying your voices across the public health system during lockdown
We know there are so many issues for health consumers and the system to navigate during an outbreak . We held a Consumer Conversation to ask how the latest COVID-19 outbreaks in Queensland were affecting you and your health. We also heard from members of our CAG and Youth Reference Group and consumer representatives, consumer, disability, aged and palliative care and culturally and linguistically diverse NGOs to find out how they’ve been impacted by the lockdowns, regional cases and concern about spread.

On Tuesday 25 May 2021, the Hon Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, Premier and Minister for Trade, introduced the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2021.The Bill is part of a long and considered process to weigh up whether Queenslanders who are dying should have a choice over the time and circumstances of their death.
Health Consumers Queensland has made a number of submissions on the Bill following consultation with consumers and carers from across the State to ensure a diverse range of views are captured and heard. On Wednesday, 14 July 2021, HCQ’s CEO, Melissa Fox, gave evidence at the public hearing for the Health and Environment Committee’s inquiry into the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2021.
